2025 Non-Profit Partner
Adaptive Expeditions is an interactive educational nonprofit using sport and recreation to offer health & wellness programs to individuals with physical and sensory disabilities. Through education, sport, and outdoor recreation adventures, Adaptive Expeditions empowers individuals with both technical skills and personal confidence to maintain active, independent lifestyles.
To realize health and wellness benefits of regular sport and recreation activities, individuals with physical and sensory disabilities must first overcome technical, emotional, and physical obstacles. AE fills a post-therapeutic gap that is both necessary and otherwise missing in the ongoing continuum of care for the individuals we serve. Adaptive Expeditions teaches participants skills for the design and mechanics of equipment outfitting, outdoor recreation risk assessment and management, as well as technical skills necessary to improve comfort, safety, performance, and independence in the pursuit of healthy lifestyles through engagement in sport and outdoor recreation.
AE instructors observe first-hand the effects of peer networking on participants’ willingness to try new activities and push themselves to reach new levels of independence and accomplishment. Social networking happens organically and incidentally within AE programs, and participation within that peer network is a major social determinant of participants’ success, not only in sport and outdoor recreation but in all aspects of their lives.
Participants leave AE programs believing: “If I can do this, I can do anything!” That attitude transfers to education, life choices, job searches, and ultimately performance on the job. In this sense, sport and recreation is not a simple luxury. Rather, AE uses sport and recreation as a tool to increase individual economic potential and change the overall health and wellness of a population at risk.
