State Advocacy

Take a look at what we did in 2026!

APTA SC-led bill, H.3842, signed into law on May 15, 2026! An act to provide physical therapists the ability to certify temporary disability placards (issued by the DMV) overwhelmingly passed both the SC House of Representatives and the Senate and was signed into law by Gov McMaster. Read the bill.

APTA SC 2026 Legislative Day took place on 2/25/26 and saw nearly 300 PT, PTA, SPT, and SPTA advocates visit the State House in Columbia to advocate for H.3842.  APTA SC was joined by APTA Director Colleen Chandler PhD, MHS, PT and State Affairs Specialist Maryam Emory, JD as part of the 2025-2026 APTA Road Show Initiative.

List of recent legislative successes:

  • Medical Authorization of Handicap Placards
  • Reduced restrictions on Direct Access for Physical Therapists
  • PT Compact Bill

Advocacy Day

Advocacy Day 2027 – TBA

Each year APTA SC holds an Advocacy Day event each spring to get an inside look at the legislative process in our state and how to advocate for our profession. This annual event is free for members and connects students, PTAs, and PTs across the state with their legislators to build grassroots advocacy efforts throughout South Carolina. This event also offers CEU credit which can be applied toward licensee’s ethics and jurisprudence requirement for licensure renewal.

Telehealth Updates

The Legislative Committee is staying apprised of the current Telehealth updates throughout the state.
